NewsJuly 19, 2006 LEF Honors 2005 Lafourche Parish Teachers of the Year Over 300 supporters of the Lafourche Education Foundation and local public education turned out for the organization's third annual Gala on April 20, raising over $75,000 for LEF programs that benefit local schools and teachers. ![]() LEF President Charlotte Bollinger greets U.S. Representative Bobby Jindal at the 2006 Lafourche Education Foundation Gala on April 20. Jindal was keynote speaker of the event, which raised over $75,000 for the foundation. The evening featured a cocktail reception and silent auction in the ballroom of the Nicholls State University Donald G. Bollinger Student Union, followed by a steak dinner and presentations by LEF representatives, community leaders and keynote speaker U.S. Representative Bobby Jindal. Congressman Jindal stressed the importance of providing students with skills they need to be effective workers, regardless if they choose college, vocational school or a full-time job after graduation. The keys to education success, he said, are better teacher pay, an improved learning environment, and ensuring that funds are provided directly to the classrooms for instruction. Also addressing the group was Dionne Chouest of Edison Chouest Offshore, who represented the area's employers that rely on a quality education system to train their future employees. She commended business owners in the parish for supporting LEF as a means to ensure their future business success, and lauded the Lafourche Parish school system for efforts to prepare students for the workforce.
